Why do some amazing shows get canceled after one season, while others keep going forever?

Okay, so I just finished The Society (again), and I’m still bitter it got axed after one season. Meanwhile, some shows that feel like they’re dragging on just keep getting renewed. What’s the deal with that? Is it ratings, streaming politics, or just bad luck? Curious to hear your theories and which shows you think deserved a second chance.
