Why do some Buddhist statues have elongated earlobes?

I’ve noticed that in a lot of Buddhist art, statues of the Buddha have these long, stretched earlobes. I know there’s symbolism in almost everything, but I can’t quite figure out what this one means. Is it something to do with renouncing wealth or maybe a symbol of wisdom? I’d love to hear what others know about this specific detail.
