Why don't more athletes use breathing techniques during high-intensity moments?

I've been reading up on how certain athletes swear by specific breathing techniques to keep their heart rate under control during crunch time, but it doesn't seem super common. Like, we see it in free divers and some martial arts, but why not more mainstream sports like soccer or basketball during penalty kicks or free throws? Is this a missed opportunity or just too hard to implement when adrenaline is high?
