Why is internet censorship becoming more common even in developed nations?

We always think of censorship happening in more authoritarian regimes, but I’ve noticed even countries considered “free” are starting to implement stricter internet controls. Is this part of a broader trend? What’s pushing governments to do this now, especially in democracies? Wondering if this will only increase as tech evolves.

I miss the days when the internet was less mainstream than today. They're going to make it boring.
