Why is Japan releasing more treated Fukushima water now, and should we actually be worried?

So I saw that Japan has started another round of releasing treated wastewater from Fukushima into the ocean, and it’s sparking some protests again. The government and scientists say it’s safe, but some countries (especially China) are pushing back hard. Is this more about politics than actual environmental risk? Also, does anyone know if the protests in Japan itself are gaining traction, or is this mostly an external issue?
