Why is the number 40 so symbolic in religious texts?

I’ve noticed that the number 40 shows up a lot in religious stories. Like, in the Bible, there’s the 40 days of the flood, Jesus fasting for 40 days, and even Moses wandering the desert for 40 years. Does anyone know why 40 is such a big deal? It feels like there's a deeper meaning I’m missing. Are there similar numbers in other religions that are repeated like this?
