The oldest known song ever created is the "Hurrian Hymn No. 6", which dates back to around 1400 BCE. It was discovered in the ancient city of Ugarit (modern-day Ras Shamra, Syria) in the 1950s. The hymn is written in the Hurrian language and was dedicated to the goddess Nikkal, the goddess of orchards.
The song itself is inscribed on a clay tablet in cuneiform script, and it includes both the lyrics and musical notation. While the exact melody is debated, musicologists have made efforts to reconstruct how it may have sounded based on the ancient notation system. The Hurrian Hymn No. 6 is considered one of the earliest pieces of music we can still study and perform.
If you're interested in hearing it, modern reconstructions are available, though the original tune would have likely sounded very different from what we associate with music today!
