The Zika virus, like dengue, is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which also spread chikungunya. Accurate diagnosis can be challenging due to cross-reactivity between Zika and dengue in tests, especially in regions with multiple flavivirus infections. Zika stands out because it can also be transmitted sexually and is associated with a higher risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological condition. Symptoms of Zika include fever, headaches, joint pain, conjunctivitis, and a maculopapular rash. Pregnant women are at risk of serious birth defects if infected. Preventative measures include using insect repellent, sleeping under mosquito nets, and avoiding areas where Zika is common. Currently, there is no vaccine, and treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Recently, two people in Pimpri-Chinchwad and eight others in Pune tested positive for Zika, bringing the total cases in Pune district to 65 since July 20. 🦟🚫
