China and Belarus started the 11-day new anti-terrorism live firing drill, Eagle Assault in Brest, Belarus covering aspects like hostage taking rescue and release, night airborne operation, water-crossing exercise and urban warfare. This exercise, which testifies to China and Belarus’ continued military cooperation, takes place against the background of increasingly close China-Belarus relations: Belarus has just joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The top tier Chinese and Belarusian leaders’ conferences have focused on enhancing the strategic and comprehensive cooperation, countering the external pressure, and rejecting the unilateralism. These drills, which are held close to the border between Ukraine and Poland, thus emphasize the military assistance Belarus provides Russia in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine; China continues to provide economic aid to Moscow despite the sanctions from the Western states.
