When the Titanic hit the iceberg in 1912, the damage was spread across six compartments. The ship was designed to stay afloat with damage to up to four compartments, but the widespread damage was just enough to sink it. The Titanic might have stayed afloat if only four compartments had been breached.

It's incredible how close the Titanic was to surviving the disaster. If just two fewer compartments had been breached, history might have turned out quite differently!
