As much as it may seem like you stand to make no progress, you are actually rushing at incredible speed! 
It makes you realize that depending on where you might be on the planet you could be whirling along with it at a rate in excess of 1,000 miles per hour. The individuals located at the equator are travelling the most while those located at the North or the South Pole are virtually stagnant. It is similar to the demonstration where you have a basketball and you spin it using your finger; the circumference of the ball that is closer to your finger has to travel faster than a layer that circle farther away from your finger in one spin, purely because of the circumference.
