Another star event of the American contingent was the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle. Bobby Finke captured the gold by breaking the world record and defending his Olympic title in the most exciting match that put the United States ahead of all other countries in the pool. Finke took 14 minutes and 30 seconds to power through the strenuous event. 68 seconds and he has done this in a new world record beating Sun Yang's record that was set in 2008. Another Italian Gregorio Paltririeri took the silver and finished 3sec behind Finke. In the race, Elso said that he finished it in 88 seconds while the silver medalist was Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen, the 800-meter gold medalist. Finke’s accomplishment positioned him as the first male swimmer to gain back-to-back victories in this event since Blair’s Australian counterpart Grant Hackett and the first American to do so since Mike Burton. This win marked another gold for the USA, making them win seven gold medals and thus displacing Australia to sit at the top as the final day of the event approached.
