Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, use bioluminescence to produce light. This light is created through a chemical reaction in their lower abdomen involving a substance called luciferin, an enzyme called luciferase, oxygen, and other chemicals. The light is used for communication, attracting mates, and warding off predators. Each species of firefly has its own unique pattern of light flashes.
