Waffles, believed to have origins dating back to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, have evolved into the popular treat we know today. Experts suggest that waffles may be descendants of crustulum, crispy, crumbly Roman biscuits cooked between heated irons. These ancient sweets spread throughout Europe with the Roman Empire and eventually made their way to the US with Dutch settlers in the 1600s. Today, waffles are enjoyed globally, with endless variations and toppings, especially in places like Belgium. In Italy, ferratelle are considered a link to the original Roman recipe, with locals treasuring the traditional iron presses used to make them.
