How do sports teams decide which alternate uniforms to keep or retire?

Some alternate jerseys become iconic, while others just… disappear. Does anyone know what goes into these decisions? Is it all about fan response, or do things like sponsorships and branding play a role? Also, what’s your favorite alternate uniform that you think deserved more time in the spotlight?
