Oropharyngeal cancer, one of the types of head and neck cancer that occurs in the middle part of the pharynx has increased in India. This cancer cause is associated with the Human Papillomavirus; it is responsible for 22% of the condition in India, whereas in the developed world it causes 70-80% of such cases. Symptoms include neck mass, dysphagia, earache, hoarseness, and sore throat. The therapy substitutes involve robotic-assisted and reconstructive surgeries besides duration, chemicals, and immunotherapy. Prevention is based on raising awareness of sexual hygiene and the potential danger of HPV, although the present guidelines in India do not recommend routine HPV vaccination for boys to prevent oropharyngeal cancer.
