A Russian theater director and playwright Zhenya Berkovich, and playwright Svetlana Petriychuk have been given six-year prison terms under the charges that were regarded as “justifying terrorism,” for their recent play “Finist, the Brave Falcon”, which delves into the phenomenon of Russian women marrying ISIS militants. During the trial, Berkovich pleaded for play stating that it was written to fight against terrorism not for endorsing it. The defense pointed out that before the play was staged it was funded by the Russian Culture Ministry, and the play was awarded the Golden Mask theater award. The women are going to appeal against this decision, which is made in the context of the pursue of the Russian authorities on suppression of dissent and freedom of arts in the country due to military operations in Ukraine.
