Mangliwan seeks redemption in Paris Paralympics

Wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan will vie for a medal in the men's 400-meter T52 race at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris on Friday, August 30. The race for T52 (disability classification where athletes have good shoulder and upper body control) begins at around 4 p.m. (Manila time) at the Stade de France. The 44-year-old racer recorded his personal best time in the 400-meter at 1 minute and 01.35 seconds at the World Championships in Kobe. This is Mangliwan's third Paralympic appearance after competing in 2016 in Rio and 2020 in Tokyo. He has yet to win a Paralympic medal. The world No.6 para athlete in the event looks for redemption in his previous Paralympics stint in Tokyo where he unintentionally crossed the adjacent lane in the men's 400 meters - T52 finals that lead to his disqualification. He registered a 1:00:80 in his race, enough for a fifth place finish but, officially, he was disqualified due to the 18.5a rule of the World Para Athletics that bars competitors from stepping out of their lane during a race. In his recent competitions, Mangliwan copped two gold medals in the 2023 ASEAN Para Games in the 200-meter T52 race and 400-meter T52 race.
