Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned NATO leaders that if the alliance lifts restrictions on Ukraine’s use of longer-range Western missiles to strike targets deep within Russia, it would be regarded as an act of war.

“This would imply that NATO countries—the United States and European nations—are at war with Russia. If this occurs, we will make appropriate decisions in response to the new threats posed to us,” Putin told reporters on Thursday.

His remarks come amid growing discussions among US and NATO allies about the possibility of permitting Ukrainian forces to use Western long-range weapon systems to target Russian military positions. Kyiv has been vocally advocating for such capabilities as the conflict extends into its second year.
