"Stranger Things" was originally titled Montauk because the show's creators, the Duffer Brothers, initially set the story in Montauk, New York. The title reflected the show's setting and the real-life Montauk Project conspiracy theories, which involve secret government experiments that allegedly took place at the Montauk Air Force Station.
However, they decided to move the setting to the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, to give the series a more generic small-town American feel.
