What photos work best for custom portraits?

Hi everyone! I’ve been thinking about ordering a portrait from one of my photos, but I’m not sure what kind of photo works best for this type of artwork. I have several pictures of my family, but some of them are taken with a phone in normal lighting and others are older photos.

Do artists need very high-quality images to create custom portraits, or can they also work with regular photos? I’d like the portrait to look accurate and detailed, so I’m wondering whether there are any recommendations about the type of photo that should be used. If anyone has experience with ordering custom made portraits, I’d really appreciate some advice.

Hi! From what I’ve learned, artists usually prefer photos where faces are clearly visible and lighting is fairly natural. The image doesn’t necessarily need to be taken with a professional camera, but it helps if the details are easy to see. When I was researching custom portraits, I found https://www.popartyou.com/ where artists create portraits based on photos you upload. They recommend choosing a photo where the person’s expression and features are visible, because that helps the artist capture the personality of the subject. Even normal smartphone photos can work well as references if the image is clear. In my case the final portrait looked very close to the original photo, so quality definitely helps but it doesn’t have to be perfect.
