Why do some religious practices embrace silence, and others emphasize sound?

Hey all! I was recently at a silent retreat and was struck by how different it felt compared to more vocal worship settings. It got me curious about the role of silence versus sound in religious practices. Why do some traditions place a high value on quiet, while others focus on chants, bells, or spoken prayer? I’d love to know if there are teachings behind these preferences and how each is meant to connect us spiritually. Would love to hear from anyone with insights!
