Why Does My Ad Tracking Software Show Different Numbers Than Facebook?

Hey everyone,

I have been pulling my hair out over this for weeks now and really need some help. I recently set up a third party ad tracking software to monitor my campaigns but the conversion numbers never match what Facebook Ads Manager is showing me.

Sometimes the difference is as high as 40 percent which is honestly making me question everything. I understand there are attribution window differences and cookie tracking issues but it seems way too large a gap to ignore.

Has anyone else experienced this and figured out the root cause?

Which number should I actually trust when making budget decisions?

You are not doing anything wrong. A 40 percent gap between Facebook and third party trackers is completely normal, especially after iOS 14 changes. Facebook uses modeled conversions to fill in missing data which inflates their numbers while your tracker only counts what it can directly see.

For budget decisions, I always made sure so my data wasn't polluted with fake clicks by relying on my third party tracker for comparing campaigns against each other since the undercounting stays consistent. But always verify against your actual backend revenue in Shopify or your CRM as the real ground truth. Never make major budget calls based on Facebook numbers alone.
