How Can I Improve the Efficiency of My Home Heating Radiators?

I’m looking for advice on improving the performance and efficiency of my home heating radiators. Recently, I’ve noticed that some rooms heat up much slower than others, and a few radiators feel colder at the top than at the bottom.

I’m wondering if this could be caused by trapped air, sludge buildup, balancing issues, or something else entirely. What maintenance steps should I try before calling a professional? Are there any tips for reducing energy costs while still keeping the house comfortable during colder months?

Cold at the top means trapped air, bleed the radiators first. Use a radiator key to open the bleed valve at the top corner of each radiator until water trickles out then close it. Check boiler pressure after and top up if below 1.5 bar. If bleeding does not fix it, sludge buildup is likely the cause. Add a central heating cleaner like Fernox F3 to the system and run it for a few weeks before draining. A professional powerflush is the most effective solution for heavy sludge buildup. If some rooms heat slower than others the system needs balancing by adjusting the lockshield valves on each radiator so water is distributed evenly. Fitting a magnetic filter like a Magnaclean is also worth doing as it catches sludge before it circulates and causes damage long term.
