Gilas Women dominate the boards to beat Thailand in Jones Cup

JACK Animam had 10 points and 21 rebounds as Gilas Pilipinas Women beat Thailand, 68-58, on Tuesday in the 43rd William Jones Cup in New Taipei City. Gilas Women dominated their Southeast Asian neighbors on the boards with a 63-41 advantage to even their record to 2-2, tying Thailand for second place as of posting time. The Philippines will close the tournament on Wednesday, 7 p.m. against Chinese Taipei-A. Afril Bernardino helped Animam on the boards, grabbing 17 rebounds, while youth player Gabby Ramos hauled eight rebounds to go along with her eight points for Gilas Women. Camille Nolasco, who also came from the Gilas Women youth teams, had nine points and shot 3-of-6 from threes, while Naomi Panganiban, from the U18 squad in the recent FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, had eight points and six assists. Gilas Women pulled away in the third quarter after a 23-14 advantage for a 50-38 lead.
