If you have only one airpod working, this is a fairly common problem that can be caused by dirty charging contacts or a syncing problem with the pair. Before you rush to the Apple Store, check out audio repair on devicefixes.com. They've got some good advice on re-setting the left and right channels, and cleaning the case to make sure it's charging both sides. It saved me from buying new ones!
